A musculoskeletal program is an initiative aimed at promoting musculoskeletal health in workplaces. The program includes a variety of interventions such as ergonomic assessments, training programs, personal protective equipment (PPE), and the implementation of safe work practices. The program aims to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), injuries, or conditions that affect the human body’s movement or musculoskeletal system. Common MSDs include carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, and tension neck syndrome.
Musculoskeletal system disorders (MSDs) are diseases and disorders that affect the body’s muscles, bones, tendons, and connective tissues. They are typically caused by bodily reactions such as bending, climbing, and twisting, hence why they are also called “repetitive stress injury,” “repetitive motion injury,” or “overuse injury.” However, MSDs do not include disorders caused by slips, trips, falls, or similar incidents. Almost 30 percent of all workers’ compensation costs are attributed to MSDs, the biggest category of workplace injuries. These injuries can occur in any workplace but are most common in industries where workers perform physical labor or engage in repetitive tasks, such as construction, manufacturing, and healthcare. Work-related MSDs are a significant cause of lost work time and decreased productivity and can result in long-term health problems for affected workers.
Preventing MSDs in the workplace requires a comprehensive approach addressing the physical and psychosocial factors contributing to these injuries. An ergonomic workplace assessment can help identify potential risk factors, such as repetitive motions or awkward postures. Strategies to reduce the risk of MSDs may include implementing ergonomic equipment and workstations, providing training on proper lifting and movement techniques, or promoting healthy lifestyle habits, such as stretching and exercise. Encouraging open communication and employee feedback to promptly identify and address potential issues is also important.
Musculoskeletal issues in the workplace are associated with work postures and movements, repetitiveness, and pace of work, among other factors such as vibration, temperature, and lack of control over one's job. Certain workplace conditions, the workstation's layout, the work speed, and the weight of the objects being handled influence these factors. MSDs can result in significant human costs that can affect a person for years or even a lifetime, as well as high economic costs for companies. Employers must address these issues by implementing preventive programs such as employee training and better tools and resources.
