What Can You Use a Health Savings Account For?

Who Is Eligible for A Health Savings Account?

There are four HSA eligibility criteria. HSA-eligible employees are those who are covered by a high-deductible health plan on the first day of the month and don’t have other health insurance coverage. Moreover, they shouldn’t be enrolled in Medicare or claimed as dependents on someone else’s tax return.

Can You Withdraw Money from a Health Savings Account?

Health savings accounts offer tax-free withdrawals only when the funds are used for qualified medical expenses. Otherwise, if employees withdraw money for non-medical purposes before age 65, the amount they take is subjected to income tax and a 20% IRS penalty.

How Much to Contribute to a Health Savings Account?

HSAs have contribution limits, which are set annually by the IRS. For 2025, the limit is set to $4,300 for self-only coverage, up from $4,150 in 2024. For family HSAs, employees can contribute up to $8,550, up from $8,300 in 2024.
