HRA, short for Health Reimbursement Arrangement, is a type of health benefit plan funded by the employer. It reimburses employees for medical expenses not covered by their insurance up to a predetermined annual limit.
A HRA account is a financial account set up by the employer to hold the funds designated for reimbursing employees' eligible medical expenses. Employees typically do not contribute to a HRA account as it's funded solely by their employer.
A HRA plan is an employer-sponsored health benefit program. It sets the framework and regulations specifying how HRA operates, including the types of medical expenses covered, the amount of reimbursement available to employees, eligibility criteria, and any restrictions or limitations on using HRA funds.
HRA insurance is often used synonymously with Health Reimbursement Arrangements. In some cases, it also refers to health insurance plans paired with an HRA. This type of health plan usually has higher deductibles and lower premiums, and the HRA is used to help offset the out-of-pocket costs for employees.
As an employer-funded health benefit plan, the employer makes contributions to the account and decides the framework, including contribution amount, list of covered medical expenses, and limitations. Employees can use these funds for eligible medical expenses up to a specified annual limit. Any remaining funds can be carried forward to subsequent years.
HRA is an abbreviation for Health Reimbursement Arrangement. Terms like HRA Account, Health Reimbursement Plan, or Health Reimbursement Insurance are often used synonymously.
Although both HSAs and HRAs assist with health insurance and healthcare expenses, they have a different structure. HSAs, or Health Savings Accounts, are owned by the individual and permit withdrawals for non-medical expenses, whereas HRAs are employer-owned and don't.
Employees cannot cash out their HRA. Instead, they can pay their healthcare expenses out of pocket and get reimbursed later from their HRA.
Unused HRA funds at the end of the year can typically be carried over to the following year, although employers may impose a maximum rollover limit. Additionally, if an employee leaves the company, the HRA does not transfer with them to their new employer.
